By joining PRT you will become part of a team of people that grows trees for our future forests!Job DescriptionA Day in the Life:PRT is looking for a seasonal Seed Orchard Technician to work at the PRT Armstrong Nursery in Armstrong, BC. Under the direction of the Operations Manager the Seed Orchard Technician (SOT) is responsible for organizing and supervising the day-to-day activities in the orchards in order to maximize the production of high-quality seed from the orchard trees while upholding PRT’s safety and environmental practices and policies. The position is non-continuous (seasonal) and during the off season, the SOT is expected to assist and take part in other nursery work which may include supervisor, quality assurance or machine operator duties. No shift work required. Candidates should have a desire and keenness to learn about the seed orchard activities, keep accurate records, work independently and efficiently. Candidates may be interviewed and tested to assess their abilities and qualifications for this position.Key Accountabilities of the Seed Orchard Technician are:Collect data on orchard inventories and mapsCollect scion material and graft onto root stockConduct pollen and cone inventoriesFertilize, prune and irrigate orchard treesAssess seed embryo developmentPlan and direct cone pick operationsAssist in winterizing irrigation systemOperate and maintain orchard equipmentAssist in developing OTIP funding proposalsRegister seed lots on SPARAttend ITAC and BCSOC annual meetingsUse of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for pest monitoringSupport innovation and continuous improvementPromote collaboration and teamwork at all levelsSet targets (i.e., production, timelines) and evaluate achievement About the team:The Seed Orchard Technician will be part of a team lead by the Operations Manager. This position is in the breathtaking Okanagan Valley, Armstrong, BC. This beautiful location offers activities and magnificent scenery all year long!QualificationsEnough about us, let’s talk about you:Required/Minimum Qualifications & Skills:Diploma in horticulture or forestry or equivalent combination of seed orchard experience and qualifications.Minimum 2-year experience in growing or seed orchard roleMinimum 2-year experience in a supervisor roleValid Driver’s LicenseIntermediate level skills with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Work, Outlook)Ability to work independently and in a team environmentStrong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skillsAttention to detail, and great organizational and record keeping skillsAbility to maintain strong professional relationships within the industryPreferred Qualifications & Skills:Pesticide Applicator CertificateAdditional InformationCompensation and Benefits:At PRT, we believe in unconditional success through people.
