Health & Safety Officer

Greater Sudbury Utilities (GSU), a diversified, community-owned corporation is looking for an experienced Health & Safety Officer. The GSU group of companies provides leadership in energy distribution, alternative generation, water heater rental products, and leading-edge telecommunications technologies and services.

In this vital role, you will oversee the administration of Occupational Health and Safety, Liability Insurance, Security, Environmental Protection and Emergency preparedness programs.

Key Responsibilities for all GSU companies:

  • Foster a healthy and safe work environment and be instrumental in maintaining high standards for health and safety.
  • Develop, implement and manage health and safety policies and procedures in compliance with applicable legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for ensuring the internal Integrated Management System (IMS) conforms to the requirements of ISO 45001 Standard, including all required documentation.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, and develop corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Conduct risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate them.
  • Develop, implement, and train employees on health & safety programs, policies and procedures.
  • Identify hazards and trends in the workplace and participate as a resource on the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Coordinate the WSIB and occupational injury claims, develop and manage the Early and Safe Return to Work Program.
  • Oversee the liability property and vehicle claims from customers and the public.
  • Organize and lead safety meetings for various departments within the organization to ensure a consistent and comprehensive understanding of safety protocols and procedure
  • Have a minimum of a 3-year post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field from recognized educational institution;
  • A trades background, in particular Powerline or Electrical would be an asset.
  • A certification in health and safety management (i.e. CRST or CRSP) would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience with health and safety management on construction projects. Knowledge of relevant safe work practices, electrical and environmental legislation.
  • Have a broad knowledge of station and high voltage equipment and be familiar with OHSA, IHSA Utility Safety Rule Book, Work Protection Code and any other applicable legislation. - Be familiar with reading & understanding electrical drawings, feeder/operating prints, work practices and standards.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team with excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) both oral and written, would be an asset.
