The OpportunityThe Poultry Veterinarian’s role is to take care of flock health, welfare, and quality for Maple Leaf’s poultry live operations and to represent Maple Leaf at industry activities related to poultry health. They will support the teams that work on quality assurance, laboratory testing, animal health and welfare, and industry issues. The goal of our veterinary and quality assurance and programs is the ongoing improvement of our health, hatchability, chick quality, and broiler breeder performance results. Snapshot of a Day-in-the-Life: Deliver technical services and guidance for poultry health. These include preventive medicine, diagnostic methods, vaccination programs, animal welfare and auditing programs, antibiotic strategies, and laboratory operations. Perform flock health field visits and postmortems for broiler breeder replacements, broiler breeders, hatcheries, and occasionally broilers. Guide bird husbandry Guide hatchability and incubation issues Provide technical guidance for chick health Deliver advice and help to the Ontario Maple Leaf live poultry operations Deliver training as needed throughout the poultry operations Support MLF initiatives including animal welfare, antimicrobial use, and food safety Provide oversight to third party veterinary services serving Ontario producers Implement proactive food safety programs relating to live poultry Provide a proactive approach to antibiotic use and preventing antibiotic resistance Support programs and projects such as raised without antibiotics, breed evaluation, bird health, feed programs, and other new initiatives What You’ll Bring: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine; eligible for licensure in Ontario Experienced and/or specialized in poultry American College of Poultry Veterinarians certification is an asset Effective communication and influencing skills Professional, objective, action oriented, team player Values-oriented and upholds a high standard of professional ethics Self-motivated with excellent problem solving ability Advanced computer skills required What We Offer at Maple Leaf Foods: Being part of a high-performance, people-focused company that has an inspiring and unique vision to become the most sustainable protein company on earth, and a deep commitment to sustainable protein across North America.
