EXTENDED HOURS : Dependent on needs of the program

SALARY :Hourly rate will increase to $29.32 after 12 months, $32.25 after 24 months

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION Tropicana Community Services, a Toronto-based multiservice organization, provides all youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage and others in need with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices. Our mission is achieved through culturally appropriate programs such as counselling, childcare, educational, and employment services and youth development.

What you will do :

  • Manage an assigned yearly caseload of approximately 250 clients; conduct follow-up with employers, clients and other service providers
  • Conduct assessments and help clients identify their skills, interests, values and aptitudes
  • Provide guidance in developing personal development plans to assist clients to achieve employment goals
  • Provide clients with effective career development strategies and help them to incorporate into personal development plans
  • Provide job search skills training and career planning services
  • Assist clients in the preparation of resumes and other employment-related correspondence
  • Research and communicate current labour market information to clients
  • Prepare clients and match them with appropriate work placements according to their inventory of skills and interests
  • Identify and assess client need for job coaching and monitor work placements
  • Determine and implement appropriate job coaching strategies
  • Achieve outcome targets for clients in employment, education and other training programs and maintain a high level of customer service
  • Maintain accurate case documentation in internal systems (e.g. EOIS-CaMS) and provide statistical information as requested
  • Provide information and make referrals to appropriate educational and training programs
  • Make presentations on behalf of the agency to employers and other service providers
  • Contribute to agency's outreach effort; maintain useful relationships community partners
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of Tropicana Community Services as outlined in the policy manual
  • Represent the organization in a professional manner at all times

What you need for this role :

  • Post-secondary Degree/Diploma in career counselling or related field
  • Strong counselling skills
  • Group facilitation experience preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of effective job search techniques and current labour market trends
  • Demonstrated creativity and resourcefulness in career counseling services
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Second language an asset
  • Computer literacy with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • A self starter who is self-directed and results-oriented
  • Ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to excel in a team setting
  • Ability to work in a multicultural/multiracial environment
